Lonisa City felt like an echo of itself. It used to be a loud, colorful place bustling with life; people perched on the steps in front of their houses to chat with their neighbors, tourists wandered through the city with their mouths open in wonder, and the crowded marketplace smelled like flowers, freshly picked mountain fruit, and imported spice.

That was the version of Lonisa City that Gavi knew. When he was very little, he had wandered away from a master and ended up lost in the city. He’d only ever known the Jedi temple, and the unfamiliar environment—huge, open, and full of strangers—was overwhelming.

Then he met Driggit. She found him crying outside of city hall and walked him back to the temple. The next time he “wandered away and got lost,” it wasn’t an accident.

She introduced him to the other Lonisa City kids. When he didn’t know their games, she taught him. Over time, Gavi came to love the city. It took shape in his mind’s eye when he used the Force: an elaborate pattern, intricate and wild, that hooked into the rest of Valo. And soon he became a part of it, too.

But this new version of Lonisa City was muted. No one lingered outside their houses anymore. The Stormwall had cut Valo off from the rest of the Republic, so there were no visitors. Even if someone were able to make it to Valo, who would want to visit a planet under tyrannical Nihil rule? The market stayed open because people had to make a living, but the merchants and food stall vendors kept watch for Nihil who swaggered in and brazenly stole their wares. They took what they wanted, broke what they didn’t want, and vandalized everything; the Nihil eye was painted everywhere, on statues, on buildings, even on the banners in front of the zoo. The air was heavy with distrust and fear.

If Gavi had focused and let himself look at the Force without trying to touch it, he would have seen Lonisa City’s shape unraveling, its edges deteriorating and its weave loosening in the center. But he didn’t. Instead, he led Kildo, Tep Tep, and Zyle deeper into the Haplak district, following streets he knew by heart. The nearby houses leaned toward each other, sharing long roofs made from metal sheeting and thatched sofra tree fiber. The kids wore their cloaks to conceal their Jedi robes, with their hoods up to hide their faces from Nihil who might recognize them.

“I don’t wanna doubt you, Gavi,” Zyle said, tugging the hem of their hood farther over their horns, “but I’m having some doubts. You sure you know where we can get that treadtruck Ram wants for scavenging the pieces of my crashed shuttle?” Ram was still working on the ship back at the temple.

“Yeah,” said Gavi. “We’re going to borrow one.”

“Borrow…permanently?” Zyle hedged.

“We’re not stealing from them,” Gavi said sharply. He passed the Kela’pi family’s general store, where most of the neighborhood purchased their daily goods.
